Sundown Mountain Re-Opens For Long Weekend

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Skiers and snow-boarders are enjoying the weather at Sundown Mountain. Last week directors closed the ski resort the season, but as the temperatures remain cold and the snow is still here, customers begged Sundown to re-open.

On this second day of spring, winter is abound.

Tony LoBianco is a longtime employee of Sundown. "March has been coming in very unique and great with snow. We've had some great snow falls in the past few weeks," he said.

For many skiers and snow-boarders, this is spring break.

"It's a little chilly up here for the end of March. This is just too cold," said skier David Cannon.

"I pictured it a little warmer, but this is fun," said Christian Antone.

Still, it's hard not to compare this blustery week, to last year's heat wave.

"I remember going back to school after spring break and it was 80 degrees. I was wearing shorts," said Katie Antone of Cedar Rapids.

Still cold, sunny and snow-packed is every skiers dream. So they'll embrace what mother nature gave them.

Sundown's owners tell us the last time they re-opened after closing for the season was in the late 1970's. That year the ski resort finally closed on April 6th.
