FAIRFIELD, Iowa - Officials evacuated a Fairfield Elementary school after a teacher spotted a grenade in a student's backpack.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s department confirms a student brought a non-active hand grenade to school. Shortly after 12 p.m. Friday, a teacher at Pence Elementary in Fairfield spotted what he thought was a hand grenade in a student’s backpack. The teacher called authorities and the school was evacuated and swept for other possible devices. Students were allowed to return after an hour.

Officials say the grenade was a “dud” bought at a army surplus store. The student is facing no criminal charges.
