DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Police say a Des Moines student will be expelled and face charges after he brought a handgun to his high school.

The Des Moines Register reports the 16-year-old boy brought the handgun and 10 bullets in a bag Friday to Lincoln High School.

Other students reported the gun to school administrators, who confiscated it.

The teen was taken to juvenile court. He'll be charged with possessing a weapon on school grounds. School officials say he will be expelled.

The student told a vice principal he brought the gun because of a dare by a friend. The gun was owned by his mother's boyfriend and he took it without their knowledge.

Lincoln Principal Paul Williamson sent a letter to parents, praising staff and officers for how they handled the situation.
