LOS ANGELES, California - Former University of Iowa mens basketball coach Steve Alford said Monday that he followed the university's direction in how he handled the sexual assault investigation involving basketball player Pierre Pierce.
On Monday, at a press conference introducing him as the new head men's basketball coach at UCLA, Alford was asked about his handling the 2002 case.
"I followed everything that the University of Iowa (sic) administration, the lawyers that were hired, I did everything that I was supposed to do at the University of Iowa in that situation," Alford said. "I followed everything that I was told to do."
Sandy Boyd was president of the UI at the time of the Pierre Pierce case. He said Alford's statement on Iowa is accurate and he wished him well at UCLA.
The Bruins basketball team has 11 national championships. In his eight seasons as the head coach of the Hawkeyes, Alford had one NCAA tournament win.
