Steady Foot Traffic at NewBo City Market

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - It's been slightly more than two months since the NewBo City Market opened its doors back at the end of October. And now with cold temperatures settling in, permanent anchor vendors and new merchants welcome in a steady number of customers.

With a cold weekend and cold stretch ahead, dozens of Eastern Iowans made a stop by the NewBo City Market to warm-up, shop and eat.

"We didn't know if the city was going to support us and they came out in droves," said Morgan Creek Farm and Markets Owner Bill Rieckhoff.

That was two months ago when it first opened. Some of the newness has worn off, but for many, it's become a regular trip instead of a one-time attraction.

"It's been really steady really consistent a lot of repeat customers," said Rieckhoff.

And new customers like Donna Jones heard about the market from her daughters and couldn't wait to walk around and shop around.

"It's something new and I just think it's fantastic down here," said shopper Donna Jones.

She picked up some custom jewelry from a vendor whose first day was Sunday.

"The stuff I do is different and I thought it would be a good niche to find," said Custom Abstract Paintings and Jewelry Owner Kim Worthington.

Before the opening of the market, organizers promised some permanent and temporary vendors would greet shoppers. That's the goal to keep you coming back; especially now as outdoor activities dwindle and more people look for fun things to do inside.

"I really encourage everyone to come out in the winter months. I mean what else is there for people to do in Cedar Rapids?" asked Rieckhoff.

The NewBo City Market is open on Thursdays from 4pm-8pm, Saturdays 8am-8pm and Sundays 10am-6pm. Along with the food and arts and crafts, the market features live entertainment and other attractions.
