TIFFIN, Iowa - A semi driver who hit and killed a man along Interstate 80 may not know it, according to the Iowa State Patrol. Rolando Calderon-Yescas, 34, of North Chicago died just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday after a semi hit him near the Tiffin exit in Johnson County.

Calderon-Yescas was struck while standing outside of his Ford F-350 pick-up truck, which he had pulled over in the westbound lanes.

"We're unaware of whether the semi was aware that he hit the individual," said Iowa State Patrol Capt. Bob Conrad. "The person was caught between the truck and the semi."

Conrad said the pick-up truck only had minor damage, so it's possible the semi driver didn't realize what he hit. "It's all under investigation right now," said Conrad. "The (semi) is going to have damage on it, maybe minor damage."

It's not clear why Calderon-Yescas pulled over where he did. His stopping point was within a few hundred yards of an exit ramp and about a mile from a rest stop. The pick-up truck was taken to an indoor towing facility where it is being held as evidence in the investigation.

"You've got to watch your distance and see what's ahead of you," said Serg Lyashenko, a semi driver who learned of the incident late Thursday morning while stopped at the Tiffin rest stop. Lyachenko warned against driving at night because of the potential to drift off to sleep. "You've got to be safe and see what's ahead of you."

Conrad said it's possible that the semi driver did fall asleep behind the wheel. "At this point we just want to talk to the individual about what happened," said Conrad.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact the Iowa State Patrol Cedar Rapids Post at (319) 396-1944.
