State Lego Competition Puts Focus on Seniors' Needs

-->
AMES, Iowa (AP) Helping senior citizens is the theme this weekend at an annual competition featuring young students building with Legos.

The Iowa FIRST LEGO League Championship will be held Saturday at Iowa State University's College of Engineering. The challenge for the teams of 9- to 14-year-olds is to focus on how to solve issues facing senior citizens.

The 72 teams in the competition have built moving robots made of Legos that are capable of sliding, hooking and moving other Lego pieces. They've been asked to think about how seniors can remain independent and engaged in their communities.

The Iowa FIRST LEGO League is one of 12 programs being promoted by the governor's advisory council on science, technology, engineering and math. The league's director says it's effective because it combines research and teamwork.
