CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Traffic cameras will be installed next week to catch speeders on southbound Interstate 380 and could be issuing tickets by mid-October, police said Thursday.
Lt. Jeff Hembera said construction will take about a week, and another full week will be used for data collection. If there are no delays, the cameras will then go live. The new camera will be located along the southbound lanes of I-380 at H Avenue NE.
Cameras are already monitoring northbound I-380 traffic north and south of downtown, at Diagonal Drive and near 29th Street. So far, more than 16,000 speeding tickets, ranging from $75 to $500, have been issued to motorists caught by those cameras.
Seven intersections are monitored by the cameras right now. An eighth, at Williams Boulevard and 16th Avenue SW, should come online in the next few weeks, Hembera said. Violations are also being captured by a camera inside a red Jeep parked in various locations.
In all, more than 27,500 tickets have been issued.
