Show You Care Spotlight: Organ Donor Memorial Wall Set to Inspire Donors
By Katie Stinson, Producer
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - "It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving." Those words are inscribed onto a new organ donor memorial wall that was unveiled today at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
The wall is intended to raise awareness to the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. Mercy Medical Center teamed up with the Iowa Department of Public Health for this project. Organizers created a contest last year asking for design submissions from area high schools, colleges and the art community. Two local artists came up with this design, using butterflies to symbolize a transition of life.
"They will have an opportunity to have donors names actually put on to the individual butterflies, and then there will be an opportunity for them to tell a story about their loved ones in a memorial book," Mercy Medical Center Patient Relations Director Vicki Huntington said.
More than 600 Iowans are currently on an organ wait list. A week from today the hospital is holding informational meetings about donating.
