Short, Brisk Walk As Healthy As 30-Minute Workout

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Stringing together short bouts of exercise can help you keep your weight down - even if you work out less than 10 minutes at a time.

The current recommendation is for Americans to get 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. Experts say it's ok to break this down into 10 minute workout sessions if that's more convenient than exercising for a half hour straight.

Even walking at a fast clip from 1 to 9 minutes at a stretch, several times a day, can help us lose weight. The key is pace. You want to get the heart and lungs pumping. Researchers say the level of intensity should be equivalent to the pace needed to walk a mile in 20 minutes.

And of course, the more workout sessions you can squeeze in a day, the better.

How might this work for you?

Take short breaks during the day and go for a brisk walk or two and work in some stairs if you can. And park far from your destination whether for work or play.
