MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa Iowa's movement into the use of electronic health records has reached a milestone as three major health systems have signed participation agreements with the Iowa Health Information Network, known as the IHIN.

Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant is the first health care facility to go live with a full IHIN connection. The Health Center began registering each new patient visit, notifying the IHIN, in August.

Based on each patient's choice to participate in use of the IHIN, other approved and participating providers in their area will be able to use the Patient Look-Up functionality to request the information about those visits from the hospital's electronic health records through the IHIN after November 1.

This ability means quicker retrieval of more complete information by physicians and other providers. It also provides easier access to important health information during an emergency.

In addition, Genesis Health System, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Mercy Health System have signed participation agreements to use IHIN services. The dates for their full IHIN connections have not yet been determined.

Iowa e-Health is leading an effort to build the IHIN, a safe and secure system giving patients' treating provider access to their vital medical information, when and where it is needed most.
