Second Runway Reopens at Eastern Iowa Airport

An airplane uses runway 8/26 for takeoff reconstruction of runway 9/27 continues at The Eastern Iowa Airport on Friday, June 4, 2010, in southwest Cedar Rapids. The runway work is expected to be completed in September. The total cost of the project will be $46.6 million. Eighty-six percent will be paid for by the Federal Aviation Administration. According to airport director of operations Sara Mau, this is the first time the runway has been rebuilt since it was first constructed in the mid 1940's. (Jim Slosiarek/SourceMedia Group News)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Eastern Iowa Airport Director Tim Bradshaw says officials are breathing a sigh of relief now that the airport's second runway has reopened.

The Cedar Rapids airfield was down to one runway for about 25 days as part of a larger construction project.

The second runway reopened Friday.

Bradshaw says the extra runway is an important backup in case of emergencies and for air traffic control. The runway also allows aircraft to land into the wind.

Crews have been working on the airport's main runway.

Bradshaw says the paving project is 70 percent done, and up to 90 percent of the runway's surface has been poured.
