Second Man Faces Murder Charge In 2003 Council Bluffs Slaying

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Another man has been arrested and charged with murder in a July 2003 slaying in Council Bluffs.

The Daily Nonpareil says 36-year-old James Harris, of Council Bluffs, was taken into custody on Tuesday. Sgt. David Dawson told the newspaper that, "We've had him for a long time in our sights."

Harris remained in Pottawattamie County Jail on Thursday. Online court records don't list the name of his attorney.

Harris and 47-year-old Thomas Sanchez, of La Vista, Neb., are suspected of stabbing to death Nelson Alvarez-Hernandez on July 31, 2003, outside a home in Council Bluffs.

The case went cold until police used DNA results to tie Sanchez to the case and arrest him in late January. He's pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to begin trial on April 15.
