School Gardens Topic of Discussion at Gathering
CORALVILLE, Iowa - Lovers of the outdoors and gardening came together in Coralville Saturday morning.
The group discussed successes and failures in establishing and maintaining gardens at area schools.
Representatives from elementary schools all the way to the university level discussed their student-garden programs.
A big topic of conversation was how to incorporate the curriculum at more schools.
"When you have that outdoor classroom, when you have that edible landscape, that place-scape outdoors. You are able to connect anything that's being taught in the school," said Scott Koepke, coordinator of New Pioneer Food Co-Op.
Speakers cited research on the benefits of gardening at school to convince audience members to help support one.
