Rugby Leaving Muddy Footprint on Eastern Iowa

By Ben Kaplan, Photojournalist

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Iowans hear plenty about football, soccer and wrestling, but another sport is looking to leave a footprint in the Hawkeye State.

Some Eastern Iowa men spent their afternoon roughing up each other all for the good of their rugby team.

The Iowa City Ducks played the Cedar Rapids Headhunters Saturday at Cheyenne Park in Cedar Rapids. The Ducks took the game with a 17-10 win.

Men of all ages make up both teams. Some players are as old as other player's parents. But many of the team members said being part of the team is more than just bruises and aching bodies, they said it's about the friendships and comradery of the team. Yet when both teams take the field, all friendliness is put aside and they play 80 minutes of rough and sometimes damaging rugby.
