DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is wasting no time sending his new running mate on the road on his own.

Aides to Romney said Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan will be in Iowa Monday making his first solo stop in the state as the GOP ticket's No. 2.

Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, will be at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Monday morning, the same day President Barack Obama begins a three-day campaign trip across Iowa.

Romney announced Ryan as his choice Saturday in Virginia.

Romney aides declined to be identified because Ryan's appearance had not yet been announced.

The fair is an iconic stop for candidates. Obama planned to campaign in Council Bluffs and Boone Monday. Although not on Obama's public itinerary, the fair is along his eastward route.
