Report Reveals Source of Secret Settlement Funds

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A response to a Senate investigation into confidential settlements paid to fired state workers reveals the money came from a variety of funds within several state agencies.

Democratic Sen. Janet Petersen asked for information on who approved the settlements with dismissed workers and for those who were paid money to keep quiet, where the money came from.

The Iowa Department of Administrative Services, for example, paid out of its utilities fund and the energy program budget.

More than 320 state workers have been let go since Gov. Terry Branstad took office in 2011. Some were paid to keep quiet, an amount that totals more than $500,000.

Petersen, chairwoman of the Senate Government Oversight Committee, has meetings set for Wednesday and Thursday at the Capitol to investigate the agreements and payments.
