CEDAR RAPIDS - An apartment complex Coe College bought in January has a new look, and the Cedar Rapids school is ready to show it to the public.

Coe bought the Hampton Court Apartments to use for student housing because of a record high enrollment. The apartments are located off of First Avenue Northeast, in Cedar Rapids, and are the closest residence halls to Coe's academic buildings.

Over the summer, Coe invested more than a $1 million fixing up the two historic buildings, one dates back to 1914, and the other to 1923.
The work included many enhancements... such as new appliances, energy-efficient windows, new lighting, and fresh paint throughout. Workers also uncovered and refinished the original hardwood floors.

Coe College official Rod Pritchard says the apartments are welcome by students.

"Our students have options of living in new apartments on campus but there's a lot of interest in students in living in these refurbished apartments as well," Pritchard said. "I think the students appreciate their historical significance."

The two buildings have 39 apartment units and about 80 students will be able to live there. They've already started moving in. Classes start next Monday at Coe.
