Red Avocado Demolished, Makes Room For Mixed Use Development

IOWA CITY, Iowa – A demolition team tore down the Red Avocado’s former building this morning to make room for a mixed-use residential/commercial development.

According to city officials, demolition began this morning at the previous site of the organic vegetarian restaurant, which was located at 521 E. Washington St. #3.

Owners said they received a 30-day notice to move on Dec. 30.

Defunct Books, a used bookstore that also occupied 521 E. Washington St., recently secured a spot at the Sycamore Mall, 1660 Sycamore St. Defunct Books plans to open Wednesday.

City officials said the other two buildings at the Washington Street location were demolished within the last two weeks.
