DUBUQUE, Iowa - People passing through Jackson Park in Dubuque got an un-welcoming message Friday morning. Someone painted a racial slur directed at African-Americans on the park sidewalks. Now, community members are trying to find ways to make sure this does not happen again.

"When I saw it I was like wow, is it getting that bad," said David Morgan of Dubuque.

The graffiti was written in sidewalk chalk allowing for easy cleanup, but the message behind the graffiti goes much deeper.

"A lot of people are trying to resolve all these tensions between the racial tensions in this town and its just people like this that just take us two steps back we go one step forward and two steps back," said Larry Pillsbury of Dubuque.

"Were doing our best to get these guys locked up and stop the violence and this only muddies the water and makes things that much more heated, that much more frustrating for everybody involved and we simply don't need that right now," said Lt. Scott Baxter of the Dubuque Police Department.
