DUBUQUE, Iowa- The jury in the Isaiah Sweet murder trial looked at gruesome photos from the crime scene. They saw close-up wound photos of Sweet's grandparents, Richard and Janet Sweet.
The 18-year-old is on trial for the shooting deaths of his grandparents in May 2012. Relatives found the couple's bodies in their Manchester home over Mother's Day weekend that year. Police arrested Sweet the next day in Cedar Rapids.
Defense attorneys admit Sweet is the person who shot and killed his grandparents. But they say prosecutors can't prove murder in the first degree.
On Friday police said Sweet planned the whole thing. Police say they found a revealing internet search on Sweet's computer. They say he was researching ways to kill someone without creating a huge mess. Police say Sweet also told them shooting his Grandparents wasn't part of his original plan.
Manchester Police Sergent Jim Hauschild said, "He told a D.C.I. Agent that he initially planned on killing Richard Sweet by hitting him in the head with a baseball bat. We found a baseball bat in his bedroom. "
Police say they were called to the Sweet's Manchester home more than a half dozen times in the months leading up to the murder. Officers responded to the home for arguments between Richard and Isaiah. Sgt. Hauschild told the jury a couple times the grandparents even asked about having Isaiah committed. Police also described Richard Sweet as a "known drinker."
