ANAMOSA, Iowa – The relationship between former Olin High teacher/coach Jeremy Chamberlin and a 14-year-old student started out innocent but they began to meet and text each other outside of school activities, Jones County Prosecutor Phil Parsons said in his opening statement Tuesday.

Parsons said over time from September 2009 to January 2010 the relationship became sexual and Chamberlin, 33, started requesting sexual favors via text messages and asked the girl, one of his volleyball players, for naked pictures. He also sent her three pictures of a penis to her.

Kjas Long, Chamberlin’s attorney, asked the jury to look at the details in this case to figure out the truth.

“Where are months and months of sexual texts? You’ll have to ask the state,” Long said.

Long said there’s no claim by the student of sexual intercourse and the state doesn’t have pictures of the penis which the student claims she received.

Opening statements began late Tuesday in the sexual exploitation trial of Chamberlin. He is charged with felony sexual exploitation by a school employee, two misdemeanor counts of lascivious conduct of a minor and three misdemeanor counts of disseminating or exhibiting of obscene materials to a minor.

Testimony will start 9 a.m. Wednesday in Jones County District Court. The trial is expected to last three days.

Parsons said the relationship eventually became physical. Chamberlin would ask the girl to meet him and he started by kissing her. Another time, he asked her to meet him on a gravel road and kissed her, lifted up her dress and kissed her breasts.

Chamberlin, who was also going to be the basketball coach, invited the girl to a basketball meeting at his home but when she arrived nobody else was there. During this encounter, Chamberlin groped her and began thrusting his pelvis against the girl.

Parsons said friends of the girl’s will testify about the text messages and pictures Chamberlin sent her.

Long said there’s no evidence of the text messages and pictures of the penis because the girl claims she destroyed them. The witnesses each have different stories about seeing the text and picture from Chamberlin. Another witness will say those alleged messages were not being sent by Chamberlin.

“She claims she didn’t have a crush or anything on him – she says he’s a creepy old guy – but then tells her sister she flirts with him by stealing his shoes,” Long said. “Something else is going on here….. and that’s reasonable doubt.”

The state did put on one witness, Matt Young, a U.S. Cellular sales manager, who testified about Chamberlin’s cell phone records between September 2009 and January 2010. There were more than 500 texts and phone calls to the student each month during that period of time.
