Prosecutor: Former Iowa Jail Guard Killed Wife
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) - A prosecutor says a former Iowa jail guard was the only person with an opportunity to kill his pregnant wife.
Scott Brown said Wednesday during opening arguments in the trial of Seth Techel that only Techel was inside the trailer when Lisa Techel was shot in May 2012. He also noted that Seth Techel waited 18 minutes after his wife was shot to call for help.
The Ottumwa Courier reports defense attorney Steven Gardner argued that authorities failed to pursue other suspects, including a neighbor. He also refuted the time lapse.
Techel is charged with first-degree murder and non-consensual termination of a human pregnancy. His first trial ended in a mistrial in March.
Jury selection concluded Tuesday. Witnesses are expected to begin testifying Wednesday.
