Suspect Arrested In Cedar Rapids in Connection To Church Scams

  • Photo
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A man was arrested in Cedar Rapids in connection to a scam that allegedly targets churches.

During their investigation into the scams, Cedar Rapids police found Steven Brown, 49, of Kingman, AZ, used an invalid credit card to pay for a hotel room at Hawthorne Suites. Officers were able to locate Brown and he was taken to Linn County Jail.

According to police, the subject involved in the scam approaches churches under the auspices of wanting to join the congregation. The subject claims to be moving to the community without his or her family, who cannot afford to make the move. The subject then asks for a small amount of cash for a hotel room until he can cash a check.

Police are investigating whether any churches locally have been targeted by the scam but none in the area have been identified as victims at this time.
