IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An Iowa City man is accused of stealing a car and driving drunk.
According to the Iowa City Police Department, at 1:58 a.m. Monday morning, 28-year-old Eric L. McDaniel walked up to a vehicle parked in the parking lot at the Walgreens in Iowa City. Police said McDaniel opened the driver's side door and shoved the victim's boyfriend.
McDaniel said "bye" to the boyfriend, backed out of the parking spot and left the lot, police said.
Responding officers discovered McDaniel driving the stolen vehicle on Benton Drive. Police said when McDaniel saw the squad cars, he fled the scene, drove south out of Iowa City and was stopped at mile marker 87 on Highway 218.
Police said McDaniel had a strong odor of alcohol and admitted to drinking earlier in the night. He refused field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test indicated he had a .209 percent blood-alcohol content. McDaniel admitted to stealing the vehicle on an "impulse" and knew he shouldn't have taken the car. He faces charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and drunk driving.
