Rollover Crash Begins With Car Running Red Light As Camera Watched

  • Photo
CEDAR RAPIDS -- A young man driving north ran a red light while a camera was watching Tuesday morning, leading to a rollover crash in northeast Cedar Rapids.

Police were called to the accident at the corner of Center Point Road NE and the westbound Collins Road off-ramp around 7:20 a.m. An officer on the scene said a northbound car and a westbound pickup collided.

The pickup tumbled onto its side in a grassy area near a chain-link fence. The car sustained major front-end damage.

The driver of the pickup was able to crawl out before emergency responders arrived. He began to experience stiffness and was taken to a hospital, but was otherwise OK, police said.

Police said the driver of the car would be ticketed for the red-light violation. A traffic camera intended to catch speeders and red-light runners going northbound on Center Point Road NE was just turned on 10 days ago.
