DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have rescued a man who officers say drove into the Des Moines River during a vehicle chase.

The Des Moines Register reports that 34-year-old Albert Lopez was pulled from the water around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers had tried to pull over a van for traffic violations, but the van sped away. After a short chase, the van driver turned into the parking lot at Prospect Park and down an embankment into the river.

Officers say Lopez refused to swim to the bank or grab a rescue rope and then began to struggle in the water. Members of a police water rescue team pulled him from the river.

A public phone listing for Lopez couldn't be found. Online court records don't list the name of his attorney.
