Police: Man Fires Shots at Passing Cars, Police Officers

DES MOINES, Iowa — Witnesses reported to police that a man was firing shots at passing cars in a Des Moines neighborhood Wednesday.

The shots were reported at Southwest 9th Street and Creston Avenue about 3:25 p.m.

Police arriving on the scene reported that the man started firing shots at them and they returned fire. Officers swarmed the area.

At 3:42 p.m., the man was taken into custody at 1018 Creston Avenue. "He was breathing but not moving," when officers found him in the backyard, Sgt. Jason Halifax said.

No officers were reported hurt. Multiple vehicles and homes in the area were hit, Halifax said.

Police said a short time later a shooting victim arrived at Mercy South, but it's unknown at this time if that shooting victim was connected with this case or another.

An ambulance was called to the scene for the man who police said was shot but alive when he was taken away. His name and condition are not yet available. Halifax said the man was in "bad shape" when he was taken away.

Halifax said the case is being treated as a homicide investigation.

Drivers should avoid using Southwest 9th Street south of downtown near Lincoln High School.
