Police Accuse Man of False Mugging Report to Cover Burglary

  • Photo
WATERLOO, Iowa - Waterloo police say a man who injured himself during a burglary later reported a fake mugging to explain his injury.

Police say 22-year-old David Sherwood is facing multiple charges, including burglary and making a false police report.

Sherwood hurt himself when he smashed a window to enter All Used Cars on Broadway Street overnight, police said, and stole cash and checks.

About 2:40 Friday morning, Sherwood called police to a home in the 1900 block of Lafayette Street. He told them three men had attacked and robbed him, officers said.

Police said they investigated and determined that mugging never happened.
