MONTICELLO, Iowa - A ruptured propane gas line lead to an evacuation in Jones County Wednesday afternoon. The sheriff said the evacuation order may be in place until Thursday afternoon.

According to law enforcement, a farmer struck a propane gas pipeline near County Road X44 and 170th Street, about 1.5 miles south of Highway 151.

Officials had evacuated some residents in the rural portions of Monticello due to the gas leak. The 12-inch pipeline has been closed off at each end. Crews are letting the remaining propane naturally drain from the pipeline.

Those evacuated from their homes are staying in area hotels Wednesday night. No injuries have been reported.
