CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - When a 12-week-old bloodhound puppy named Achilles wound up at an Iowa City veterinarian, he was looking blue with severe breathing problems.

After consent from the owner to run blood tests and x-rays, the owner stepped out for a minute - and never returned. The local vet was left with the pup and a $1,700 bill.

Vets at the Bright Eyes and Bushy Tail Veterinary Hospital say they told the owner treatment would be expensive. The hospital tried to contact the owner for the unpaid bill, but the address was a fake and no calls were returned.

"Pets require planning and forethought and they're not cheap to own. It's a responsibility. But they're living animals that deserve to be taken of,” said Veterinarian Jenn Berger.

Berger says this is the second dog this month to be abandoned. She says Achilles is now doing well and is ready for a new home.
