Outpouring of Generosity Will Help Family With Recovery

IOWA COUNTY, Iowa- More than 250 family, friends and even complete strangers have contributed to a fund to help a Williamsburg family following a horrific traffic accident.

Kaitlyn Mumm, 4, died in a wreck Friday night south of Highway 6 near Marengo. Kaitlyn's mother, Brandi Mumm and another driver suffered serious injuries. Her death was one of 11 on Iowa roadways over the weekend and in many cases icy roads played a part.

Kaitlyn's father, Matt Mumm, is a 1998 graduate of Iowa Valley High School in Marengo. And the 64 classmates from that year decided they needed to do something to help the family recovery in this time of tragedy. So they launched a website to raise money to help the family with funeral, medical and recovery expenses. And with a very modest goal at first, the online fundraising exploded in less than 24 hours.

Cody Knapp is one of the organizers of the fundraising, and he said classmates of Matt Mumm didn't know what to expect at first.

"Just a couple of thousand dollars to help them get by for a month or something, help meet immediate needs. I never thought there would be so much support. There are so many people with problems and so many donations everywhere," Knapp said.

But Knapp said $3,000 came in within a few hours so organizers raised the goal to $10,000. Donors met that amount within a day and now organizers are hoping to get $15,000. More than 271 individuals had contributed online as of Monday evening.

Knapp said Brandi Mumm, also an Iowa Valley graduate, was beginning to recover from her serious injuries Monday. He also said the family has been touched by the outpouring of generosity.

"They're overwhelmed, I guess, speechless and very appreciative. And they're kind of caught off guard by all of this going on right now," Knapp said.

He said the small number of classmates weren't sure just how much they could accomplish by themselves. With the generous donations of people, some of whom didn't even know the family, they now have a much better idea.

In addition to the online donation site, the classmates also set up a fund at a Williamsburg bank. Donors wishing to contribute there can send it to:
