Ottumwa Man's Second Murder Trial Won't Be Moved

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) - The retrial of a man accused of killing a 17-year-old girl 40 years ago will not be moved from Wapello County in southern Iowa.

Robert Pilcher's first trial ended in a hung jury last month. He'd been charged with killing Mary Jayne Jones in April 1974 at a farmhouse about seven miles from Ottumwa.

The Ottumwa Courier says prosecutors sought the change of venue, citing the defense's use of social media during the trial "to express opinions about the evidence and jury deliberations." Defense attorneys argued against moving the retrial.

On Tuesday Judge Richard Meadows denied the prosecution's request. The retrial is scheduled for September.
