HIAWATHA, Iowa - Operation Home, a program run through the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, gave a 2002 Saturn to a previously homeless veteran Friday.

An anonymous donor gave the car to Operation Home. The program helps homeless or nearly homeless veterans.

Program operators check out the Saturn, made sure it was running right, then gave it away.

Operation Home is helping Kayla Stevenson and her husband Patrick. The family's had a rough time this winter with a single vehicle that wasn't reliable.

Operation Home's organizer said Friday's giveaway was the first auto donation intended for a veteran's family in need. The group currently serves about 120 veterans in a seven county area.
