One Person Killed After Heavy Machinery Tips Over

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - One person was killed Monday morning after a backhoe tipped over and trapped the operator. It happened at about 9:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Springville Road and Abbe Hills Road, approximately a mile north of Mount Vernon.

Officials said that when they arrived on the scene they found a Caterpillar tractor with a loader and a backhoe had tipped over in a ditch, trapping the operator. Crews were able to free the operator from underneath the machine, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's name is not being released by investigators. The accident is under investigation.
