One Last Chance to Buy Something at Westdale as Closed Mall Sets Auction
By Dave Franzman, Reporter
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Shoppers in eastern Iowa will get one final chance to say goodbye to Westdale Mall and actually go shopping inside, but it won't be the typical retail mall experience and people won't be able to buy the usual items.
Westdale Mall is about to go through a major renovation and except for the Younkers and J.C. Penney's anchor stores, all but one of the smaller retail stores closed by the end of March. The lone exception is City Looks which will remain open until the end of April while a new building is finished. But shoppers can actually go in again and buy something as part of a giant auction of all the fixtures and furnishings inside.
The auction at Westdale is set for Saturday April 19 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Potential buyers can even come a day early on Friday, April 18 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to inspect everything for sale.
Lisa Rowe, general manager of Westdale Mall, said she expects hundreds of people for the auction and it should be a mixture of different types of buyers.
"I think you will see people from around the area who want that one piece of nostalgia from Westdale's history. We'll have scrappers from perhaps out of state. And I think you will have people with retail interests who want the display fixtures," Rowe said.
Rowe said there are thousands of tables, chairs, kitchen fixtures and counters for sale to the public during the auction. The only mall entrance currently open to the public is on the upper level by Younkers.
