BENTON COUNTY, Iowa - Authorities said white out conditions contributed to a crash that killed Austin Kness, 21, of Cedar Rapids.
Kness's funeral will be held at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel in Cedar Rapids. He died Thursday at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Kness was one of four people injured when Haylie Hayes, 20, of Cedar Rapids lost control near the intersection of Highways 30 and 218 in Benton County about three miles southwest of Newhall around 5:15 p.m. Monday. She crossed the center line on Highway 30, made a 180 degree turn and was rear-ended by another car. The driver of that car, Jacob Nolan, 28, of Atkins, had to be taken to the hospital for treatment for his injuries. He was released a day later.
Helicopters took Kness and another passenger in Hayes' car, 26-year-old Trenton McCleary, to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Kness died Thursday. There is no update on McCleary's condition. Hayes also was injured in the crash and had to be taken to the hospital. Authorities expected her to survive.
