TOLEDO, Iowa — One person died in a fiery crash early Thursday morning near Toledo.

Firefighters responded around 2:40 a.m. to a single-vehicle accident on 295th Street near Deerfield Crossing. They found a car that hit a tank of gasoline on a farm at the end of the dead-end road. The car was on fire, with one person inside, authorities said.

“There was a tree right there that caught fire, and it spread to a barn, but it was all quickly extinguished by the fire department,” said Greg Johnson, EMT crew chief and death investigator.

Johnson said the person was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured from the crash or the firefight.

The victim’s name was not released, pending notification of family members. Asked whether the person was male or female, Johnson said, “we’re going to wait for postitive identification on that.”
