IOWA CITY, Iowa – On the heels of a federal judge ruling that California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, One Iowa will hold a rally in Iowa City as part of its week-long launch for its voter education project “Stand Proud, Vote Proud.”

Spokesperson for One Iowa Justin Uebelhor said the goal of Thursday’s rally will be to educate voters about the importance of electing legislators that are in favor of same-sex marriage.

Uebelhor said if anti-gay legislators are elected in November that could be enough to push a constitutional amendment in Iowa banning same-sex marriage.

In his ruling released Wednesday, Chief U.S. District Court Judge Vaugh Walker in San Francisco wrote “Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples.”

Talk amongst same-sex marriage supporters and opponents anticipate the constitutionality of banning same-sex marriage may end up being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Thursday’s rally starts at 11 a.m. at the Iowa City Public Library located at 123 South Linn Street. Representative Mary Mascher is expected to be one of the guest speakers.
