October Snow Stuns Tourists in Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The morning snow flurries greeted hundreds of tourists in downtown Dubuque. Those who've come to town to fancy the fall foliage, were feeling a little foolish.

"I'm still looking at the fall colors. You should be able to look at those before it starts snowing," Mark Clausen of Minnesota said.

Across town at Theisen's Home, Farm and Auto, it's out with the T-shirts and in with the winter coats.

"It's like right here, right now. My husband is like 'Oh I gotta get some winter clothes,'" Sue Wilson said.

Shoppers at Theisen's are searching for a winter wardrobe more than a month earlier than usual.

"Gloves, hats, jackets - things like that, " Jim Gabel, Theisen's Manager, said.

Managers said the shovels and snow blowers are staying put, at least for now. Items like anti-freeze are flying off the shelves.

"We actually ran out of one brand. We're hoping to get some more in today," Gabel said. "People are buying windshield solvent. I think I did see a few ice scrapers go out this morning."

"Mother nature doesn't play by the rules, " Wilson said.

No matter those supposed rules, today's dusting served as a reminder. Winter really is right around the corner.
