Obama Nominates Iowa lawyer for US Attorney

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - President Barack Obama has nominated a lawyer from an Iowa-based life insurance company to serve as a top prosecutor in the state.

Obama announced his nomination Thursday for Kevin W. Techau to serve as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Iowa. Obama called Techau a fair, tenacious and respected attorney.

Techau is associate general counsel at American Equity Investment Life Holding Co. in West Des Moines. His previous roles include commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety and assistant federal public defender for the Iowa Federal Defender's Office. He retired from the Iowa National Guard in 2011 as a colonel with 27 years of experience.

If confirmed, Techau would replace Stephanie Rose, who was sworn in as a federal judge for the state in November 2012.
