OWI Charge Filed After Des Moines Motorist Hits Worker

POLK COUNTY, Iowa - The Polk County Sheriff's Office said a Des Moines man was arrested and charged after hitting a construction worker while driving drunk Friday.

The crash was reported at 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Delaware and NE Broadway Avenues.

Deputies said Amir Vodenicarevic, 37, of Urbandale, was removing concrete debris from the roadway with other construction workers when he was struck by a westbound vehicle driven by David Westmoreland.

Vodenicarevic was taken to a hospital for leg and possibly other injuries.

Westmoreland, 41, was charged with third offense operating while intoxicated, driving while license suspended and failing to yield to a pedestrian crossing or working on a roadway.

He was taken to the Polk County Jail. Bail was set at $5,562.50.
