November 5th Election Draws Several Candidates

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Seven candidates will face off on November 5th for two open At Large seats on the Cedar Rapids City Council. Incumbent Chuck Swore will be joined by Anthony Brown, Leland Freie, Carletta Knox-Seymour, former council member Jerry McGrane, Ralph Russell, and Susie Weinacht.
In an interview Monday, Swore told TV9 News that he hopes people will come to the polls and not leave the voting to others, especially when it comes to the proposal to extend the 1% local option sales tax. The City of Cedar Rapids has said it will put 100% of the sales tax toward the costs of maintenance, repair, construction, and reconstruction of public streets. However, Swore acknowledged that the measure, while receiving positive feedback from many residents, is a polarizing one. He said post-flood issues are another reason that there are so many candidates coming into the fray for this election.
