Northwood Residents Being Evacuated For Fire At Fertilizer Storage Facility

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Authorities have lifted an evacuation order for residents of a small northern Iowa city, following a fertilizer fire at the local airport.

The Worth County Sheriff's Office says the evacuation was called off around 3 p.m. Thursday. The order was originally issued after a fire broke out around 9 a.m. in a storage-like building that contained fertilizer at Northwood Municipal Airport.

Officials say a plume of smoke hung over the city, and the evacuation was necessary because of concern over the chemicals inside the building.

Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in nearby Mason City says four people sought treatment following the fire. Their conditions have not been released.

Northwood has a population of about 2,000 people. It's located on the Minnesota state line about 130 miles north of Des Moines.
