Northwood Man's Chicken Request Rejected

By Rachel Begle

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (AP) - A Northwood man has lost his court fight to keep chickens in his backyard but says he hasn't given up.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports a Worth County jury found Leo Hendrick guilty of keeping chickens within city limits, in violation of Northwood's city code.

It took the jury about 15 minutes to reach its verdict Friday.

Hendrick must pay a $50 vine and court costs.

Hendrick says he plans to speak at an upcoming city zoning board meeting and a City Council session, imploring them to change city regulations. He plans to keep his chicken with a neighbor who is far enough from other homes to abide by the ordinance.

Northwood City Attorney John Greve calls the entire episode a waste of time and money.
