NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa - A North Liberty man is in custody after allegedly choking a woman and threatening her with a knife in November.
According to North Liberty police criminal complaints, on Nov. 16, 2013, 22-year-old Eric M. Washpun got into an argument with a woman at his apartment that turned physical. Police said Washpun used his hands and forearm to choke the woman, who later reported to police that she could not breath during the assault. The woman suffered from red marks, scratches and pain around her neck, police said.
Washpun also allegedly wielded a knife during the assault. Police said Washpun waved the knife in the woman's face while she was cornered into a closet. Police said Washpun wouldn't put the knife down or allow the woman to leave. She later told police that she was afraid Washpun would cut or stab her if she tried to move or leave the closet.
According to jail records, Washpun was booked at the jail Tuesday night. He faces charges of domestic assault - impeding breathing with bodily injury, domestic assault while displaying a weapon and false imprisonment.
