IOWA CITY, Iowa - Those in charge of the New Pioneer Cooperative are asking members to approve a second expansion in the same year. In a letter sent to members last week, leaders are asking for one of two things: either approval to move the current downtown Iowa City location out of the floodplain, or approval to open a second store in the city.

Earlier this year, a planned move to the intersection of Gilbert and College streets failed when city council members voted for developer Mark Moen's controversial "The Chauncey" project instead for that location. The 20-story project is expected to cost nearly $54 million and include a movie theater, office space, residential units and a hotel.

On October 1st, New Pioneer executives were in Cedar Rapids to announce an expansion into Linn County. The store in the 3300 block of Center Point Road should be open by 2015.
