New Homeless Shelter to Open in Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A new homeless shelter set to open in downtown Des Moines next week will offer the homeless more than just a place to sleep.
Des Moines television station KCCI reports that $15 million Central Iowa Shelter has floor-to-ceiling windows, a cafeteria, lounge areas, a health clinic and computer-equipped classroom to encourage the homeless to work on their GED. The new facility is five times larger than the old building, will house more than 200 people and includes 19 small locked apartments for veterans. A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for Friday, and the shelter will begin housing people the following week. |
