New Field Of Dreams Owner Calms Concerns of Dyersville Residents
DYERSVILLE, Iowa -– On Sunday, about 75 Dyersville residents packed into a small conference room at the Dyersville Social Center off Third Ave SE.
They finally got their chance to question new Field of Dreams Co-Owner, Denise Stillman. Denise and husband, Mike Stillman, are a Chicago-based couple and owners of Go The Distance LLc. The Company purchased the Field of Dreams last year from former owners, Becky and Don Lansing.
Following the purchase, Governor Branstad signed a sales-tax rebate for up to 16 and a half million dollars. The Stillmans said that measure helped them to attract more investors and was key to the success of the 24-field complex.
“I want to make sure it’s clear,” Stillman said to the crowd, “The risk is upfront on the investors in our group. We are putting up all the money for water and sewer that’s going to be brought to the facility.”
People asked questions ranging from water usage, to traffic and road congestion to medical care needed for players.
“They say they have medical staff to take care of the little things, sprained ankles and knees, which makes me feel confident we can serve the rest of their medical needs,” said Dyersville Volunteer Fire Chief, Tim Gansemer.
At the meeting Sunday, Denise Stillman gave residents a chance to see for the first time what All-Star Ballpark Heaven looks like and what other amenities it will provide to the city and county.
“Whenever there’s not enough information,” said State Senator, Tod Bowman, “That’s when rumors begin. For her to come out here and talk to people I’m sure is intimidating, but also answered a lot of questions.”
The Field of Dreams movie site will remain untouched, although Stillman did joke about adding indoor plumbing near the concession stand. Just beyond the cornfield will be 24 pristine baseball diamonds. The complex will house teams and coaches in a state of the art clubhouse. Families will need to find accommodations off-site.
An indoor onsite training facility will allow for year round use by local teams and universities. There will also be an olympic size swimming pool, performing arts theater and gazebo for city or county events.
The price tag for the facility is 34 million. It will employ 48 full-time year round staff and is expected to generated 2.3 million in its first year of operations which begins in the summer of 2014.
