CRAWFORD COUNTY, Wisconsin - Authorities in Crawford County are investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

At 5:30 p.m. Monday, the Crawford County Sheriff's Department responded to a call for an unresponsive man lying in his driveway on CTH X in rural Clayton Township. Responding deputies found a 70-year-old man in the driveway, dead from a gunshot wound. Deputies then searched the house and found a 68-year-old woman, later identified as the man's wife, in the bedroom. She had also been killed by a gunshot wound, police said.

Authorities believe the man shot his wife inside the house and then turned a gun on himself. The couple's names have not been released.

Autopsies will be performed on the deceased and investigators are trying to determine what led to the murder-suicide. Crawford County Sheriff Dale McCullick said deputies were last called to the property in 2008 and have never responded to the residence for a domestic situation.

The Wisconsin State Crime Lab and Wisconsin State Patrol have been called into assist with processing the scene for evidence and completing a diagram of the crime scene.
